Our Story
Rev. Andra Hoxie, Founding Pastor of Faith AME Mission

Faith AME Mission at Woodbridge VA was founded on Sunday, October 17, 2010. The founding members were Rev. Andra D’Etta Hoxie, pastor, Bro. Bernard Hayes, Sis. Audrey Prescott, and Sis. Amanda Hoxie. Faith AME’s founding core expanded in the first month to include Bro. Greg Mason, Sis. Yvonne Mason, Sis. Toyy Mason, and Bro. James Dorsey. The opening worship was held in the Chapel at Sentara Hospital, Woodbridge VA. God had given Rev. Hoxie a vision to expand her chaplaincy work at the hospital to include a unique ministry to those who are sick and those who serve and care for persons who are hospitalized. The worship service was televised to patient rooms and nursing stations. An invitation to worship was shared each Sunday over the hospital’s public service announcement system. It was radical and it was new. Many unique opportunities for ministry was shared each week including performing weddings, baptisms, and homegoing services. Friendships and longstanding bonds were formed with patients, families, and caregivers. Several more persons were added to the rolls. As membership and ministry opportunities arose, it became clear that it was time to relocate. In 2012, Rev. Hoxie received the first pastoral appointment to Faith AME Mission at Woodbridge from The Right Reverend Adam J. Richardson, Presiding Prelate of the 2nd Episcopal District.

This group of faith-filled persons moved to our second location at Daisy Red Avenue, but God had other plans. After a short while, the growing congregation moved to 13151 Minnieville Road in what we called The Upper Room (3 long flights of stairs and no elevator). The focus on ministry to the homeless community expanded. The emphasis remained missions and outreach to the most vulnerable members of the community. The following persons acknowledged their call to ministry and were licensed to preach by the late Presiding Elder Goodwin Douglas: Bernard M. Hayes, Deborah Thurman, Cliff Colley, and Nesta Joseph. We held our first Thanksgiving community outreach, Maundy Thursday Foot Washing Service, Easter Sunrise Service, Domestic Violence Seminars, Men’s Choir, Young People Liturgical Dance Team, and Women’s Prayer Retreat. The ministry continued to expand and once again God moved Faith AME to larger space at 2050 Old Bridge Road, Woodbridge VA. This new space allowed additional expansion of ministry and Brothers Breaking Bread, a monthly prayer breakfast for men only, was formed. Bro. Bernard Hayes was ordained an itinerant deacon in the AME Church.

In April 2018, Faith AME Mission at Woodbridge VA was accepted as a station in the Washington Annual Conference of the Second Episcopal District under the hand of The Right Reverend James Levert Davis, Presiding Prelate. Our theme scripture is 2 Corinthians 5:7, For we walk by faith, and not by sight. The members are encouraged and committed to running the race that God has set before us, faithfully. To God be the glory for the great things He has done!
